Ryan Clarke, Jason Taylor (back from suspension), Ryan Watson, Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Chris Hackett, playing against his former club, all came into the Cobblers side for their second round Johnstone’s Paint Trophy tie away at League One side Millwall.
Jordan Archer, who had a loan spell at Sixfields during the 2014/15 season, started in goal for the Lions, who also included in their starting line-up former Cobblers striker Steve Morison.
After a scrappy opening to the game Aiden O'Brien was denied by the woodwork when his shot from a very tight angle struck the base of the post. Clarke then made a good double save to deny Morison as the home side looked to build up a head of steam.
Referee Iain Williamson turned down the Cobblers penalty appeals on 41 minutes, John-Joe O’Toole going down in the area under pressure from Jack Powell. In the final action of the first half, another fine save from Clarke was required to keep out a Morison header.
With clear cut chances for either side still proving hard to come by Chris Wilder made a double change on 65 minutes, Sam Hoskins and Nicky Adams coming on for Jason Taylor and Chris Hackett.
The deadlock was broken by Millwall on 70 minutes, Aiden O'Brien rifling the ball home having been played in by substitute Ben Thompson.
Lee Gregory quickly doubled the Lions lead, Morison’s cross providing the assist for his strike partner to score from close range.
The Cobblers came close to pulling a goal back almost immediately, Lawson D’Ath cruelly denied by the crossbar. Archer saved from O’Toole as Town continued to press but it wasn’t to be their night as they exited the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy in South East London.
