COBBLERS BEATEN IN FA YOUTH CUP

27 October 2015

Northampton Town 0 Notts County 2 - FA Youth Cup 1st round report

Northampton Town’s youth team took on Notts County in the first round of the FA Youth Cup on Tuesday night at Sixfields.

Montel Gibson drew an early save from Charlie Andrews and it was Notts County who took the lead on 17 minutes through Jack McMillan’s free-kick.

Some neat build-up play lead to the ball being played into Shaquille Master just before the half hour but the County keeper was alert to the danger.

County doubled their lead on 34 minutes, Montel Gibson scoring from close range after Andrews could only parry a fierce drive from Tamar Clayton-Naute.

Jordan Aghatise went close to adding a third for the away side soon after, his header tipped onto the bar by Andrews.

Craig Hinton’s side started the second half brightly as they looked for a way back into the game, Robbie Parsons twice and Tom Carroll testing Joe Searson-Smithard.

As the Cobblers continued to press, a free-kick from Master came back off the post while Matty Forster also went close. Robbie Parsons then had a chance to halve the deficit with the clock ticking down but couldn’t direct his header on target.

There was to be no way back for the Cobblers though and despite a spirited second half performance where they created a host of chances, they were knocked out of the cup.
