Northampton Town kicked off their 2015/16 pre-season campaign at local UCL side Sileby Rangers.

On a cool and cloudy afternoon at Fernie Fields Cobblers boss Chris Wilder included summer signings Adam Smith, Josh Lelan and David Buchanan in his starting line-up as well as trialists Sam Hoskins (striker), Gozie Ugwu (striker), Rod McDonald (defender) and Joel Purkiss (striker).

Home keeper Liam Waddy made a couple of early saves to keep the score level, firstly tipping over a left-footed effort from John-Joe O’Toole before then keeping out a header from trialist McDonald.

It was to be another trialist who was to open the scoring though, Sam Hoskins with a neat left-foot volley on 26 minutes.

McDonald tested Waddy with a long range shot on 42 minutes, the Sileby stopper doing well to palm the ball over the bar.

For the second half only McDonald remained from the starting XI as Chris Wilder made ten changes, bringing on amongst others Ryan Clarke, Nicky Adams and Alfie Potter.

Marc Richards, another player introduced for the second half, went close to doubling the Cobblers lead on 72 minutes, rifling a shot just over the crossbar. In what looked a tight decision, last season’s leading goalscorer then had a goal disallowed for a marginal off-side.

It was to finish 1-0 with the Cobblers pre-season campaign set to continue with a week and two more games in Brighton.
