Chris Hackett came into the Northampton Town side for the visit of Russell Wilcox's York City as John-Joe O’Toole served the first game of his three-match ban. With Ben Tozer having picked up a knee injury in training, academy players Shaun McWilliams and Danny Clifton were named on the Town bench while former Cobblers striker Emile Sinclair, who left Sixfields in January, started for York.

Ryan Cresswell headed just over from an early free-kick but the Cobblers were soon in front when Chris Hackett got between a York defender and goalkeeper Bobby Olejnik to slot home.

As the first half reached the midway point Lawson D’Ath went close to doubling Town’s lead, his chipped shot coming off the angle of post and bar following good work by Marc Richards.

From a York corner on 29 minutes Matt Duke made a good save to keep out a Keith Lowe header, Cresswell providing the subsequent clearance.

Brendon Moloney doubled the Cobblers lead at the start of the second half, D’Ath setting up the chance for the right back and his left footed drive beat Olejnik.

York had a chance to pull a goal back on 51 minutes but Wes Fletcher couldn’t keep his shot down. At the other end Olejnik made a good stop following a terrific run and shot from Ricky Holmes.

Ivan Toney replaced Hackett in the Cobblers first change before Marc Richards spurned the opportunity to make it 3-0 from the penalty spot, Olejnik guessing right to make the save. The penalty had been awarded for a foul by Malvind Benning on Holmes.

Darren Carter came on for the last 15 minutes in place of Joel Byrom before Duke made a good save to deny York substitute Diego De Girolamo.

Ivan Toney added a third goal for the Cobblers on 89 minutes, the striker with a terrific finish after some good build up play involving D’Ath, Holmes and Carter. 3-0 was how it finished as Chris Wilder’s side continued their push up the table.
