Chris Wilder made a number of changes to his side for the Capital One Cup first round tie against Blackpool. Ryan Clarke replaced Adam Smith in goal with Sam Hoskins and Dominic Calvert-Lewin also making their competitive debuts.

The match was preceded by a minute’s applause in memory of Andy King, the ex-Everton midfielder and former Cobblers assistant manager who sadly passed away over the summer.

The Cobblers started the game quickly and created two good chances in the opening ten minutes, Hoskins forcing a save out of Kyle Letheren while Calvert-Lewin saw a header flick the top of the cross bar.

Town continued to be the dominant force in an attacking sense and deservedly took the lead on 21 minutes, Chris Hackett’s deflected shot beating Letheren.

Three minutes later and it was 2-0, Sheffield United loanee Dominic Calvert-Lewin scoring with a delightful shot on the turn.

Sam Hoskins then increased the Cobblers lead further just before the half hour mark, the striker scoring at the second attempt after his initial effort had been blocked.

Blackpool made a couple of changes at half-time to try and stem the tide but it was the Cobblers who started the second half on top, Letheren saving from Joel Byrom after a neat free-kick routine.

Ryan Cresswell then had a shot deflected over by Tom Aldred as the Cobblers relentless attacking intent refused to let up.

John-Joe O’Toole replaced Jason Taylor in the Cobblers first change of the night before Blackpool went close to pulling a goal back, Kwame Thomas’s header being blocked at the near post.

The livewire Calvert-Lewin was really catching the eye and the on-loan striker went close to doubling his tally for the night when he turned Blackpool defender Lloyd Jones only to see his sweetly struck effort well saved by Letheren.

Alfie Potter came on for Chris Hackett as on 75 minutes the Cobblers completed their triad of substitutions, Ricky Holmes having earlier replaced Lawson D’Ath.

Although the Cobblers didn’t add to their three first half goals they proved to be more than enough as their general dominance was rightly rewarded with a place in round two.
