Event to remember Robbie James Warner
A football tournament in memory of Robbie James Warner is to be held later this month at the University of Northampton on Wednesday 22 April.
Organised by the University of Northampton Stallions Men’s Football Club of which Robbie was a member, the all day, 7-a-side tournament seeks to bring together the community that played with the first year student every Wednesday and raise funds to commission a memorial bench to be placed on campus.
James Cooper, President of the Men’s Football Club, took a lead in organising the event following a balloon release held earlier this year on the Racecourse opposite the University of Northampton’s Avenue Campus.
He said, “Robbie was a passionate footballer, with a free spirit and effervescent personality. Full of enthusiasm for all our activities, on and off the pitch, we could think of no a more fitting event than to organise this tournament in his memory to bring together all those who played, laughed and had fun with him.
“In such a short time, he touched the lives of so many students and staff at the University, which is why we’re committed to ensuring a permanent memorial can be placed on campus through the purchase of a bench.
“One of our youngest Stallions, we’ll be retiring the number 9 shirt permanently in his memory and enshrining the Memorial Tournament in our Club constitution as an annual fixture.”
Over 100 students, staff and friends of Robbie’s are to compete in the tournament from 10am on Pavilion Pitch at the University’s Park Campus and is open to any and all spectators who wish to attend.
Friends are also invited to a post-match event to be held at Park Students’ Union from 8pm, where the winning team will receive their award following the day’s activities, for a suggested donation to the memorial fund of £2.
