Northampton Town’s Easter weekend double-header kicked off on Good Friday with a trip to AFC Wimbledon. Zander Diamond replaced the injured Tom Newey in the only change to Chris Wilder’s side, Lee Collins switching to left-back.
Ricky Holmes had an early shot blocked at close range with John-Joe O’Toole’s follow-up effort deflected wide. Craig Tanner found the side netting for the Dons on the half hour while James Gray headed straight at Ross Worner.
Dons started the second half brightly, Ryan Cresswell doing well to clear Adedeji Oshilaja’s header across the face of goal and Matt Duke making a good save to deny Tanner.
Gray felt he had been pushed in the penalty area when he headed just wide before Ivan Toney came on for O’Toole in the Cobblers first change.
Sean Rigg put the home side in front on 58 minutes after getting the final touch to a free-kick to score from close range.
That lead was then quickly doubled, Jake Reeves scoring with a low shot past Duke after the Cobblers keeper had done well to save Tanner’s initial effort. Tanner then rifled a shot against the crossbar as the Dons went close to adding a third.
James Gray then scored twice to get the Cobblers back on level terms, his first a cool finish from a Ricky Holmes cross and his second a terrific header from a Brendon Moloney free-kick.
Gray had a shot saved by Worner in stoppage time but 2-2 was how it finished with all four goals having come in a frantic 12-minute spell in the second half.
