Northampton Town were without leading goalscorer Marc Richards and Daniel Alfei (both hamstring) for the trip to Morecambe. Ivan Toney and Ben Tozer came into the side with Lee Collins continuing at centre-half, Zander Diamond having failed a late fitness test on an ankle injury. Former Cobblers left-back Joe Widdowson started for Morecambe.

Barry Roche saved an early Toney free-kick as Town started brightly. With the Cobblers continuing to make most of the running an instinctive reaction save from the experienced Roche somehow denied Kaid Mohamed from a Chris Hackett corner just before the half hour mark.

The Cobblers deservedly took the lead on 33 minutes, Ivan Toney rising highest to head home his fourth goal of the season.

Padraig Amond had a shot comfortably saved by Jordan Archer on 56 minutes in a rare attempt for the home side. The Cobblers were really limiting Morecambe’s attacking threat but going into the last quarter of the game still only had a slender lead.

John-Joe O’Toole replaced Lawson D’Ath before Morecambe substitute Paul Mullin shot wide when maybe he should have made more of the opportunity.

The remainder of the game passed without real incident, the Cobblers hard working performance rewarded with three points.
