Darren Carter, John-Joe O’Toole, Marc Richards, David Moyo and Alex Nicholls, recalled from his loan spell at Exeter, all came into the Northampton Town side for the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy second round tie at Portsmouth.

Portsmouth started the brighter but it was the Cobblers who nearly took the lead on 18 minutes when a Marc Richards shot was well saved by Paul Jones. From a quick Pompey counter-attack Ryan Taylor then  headed just wide from a Jed Wallace cross.

Jones made a terrific one-handed save to keep out a trademark Richards header on 22 minutes as the Cobblers continued to press their hosts.

David Moyo fired Town in front on 28 minutes, his shot curled in off the post following a slick forward flowing move involving Byrom and a surging run from Carter.

Pompey equalised on 37 minutes, Ryan Taylor showing a good first touch before slotting the ball home.

The Cobblers were then dealt a further blow with top goalscorer Richards forced off with an injury, Kaid Mohamed the player to come on.

Kaid Mohamed put the Cobblers back in front ten minutes into the second half, getting on the end of a Lawson D’Ath cross to finish from close range.

That lead was nearly extended by Ryan Cresswell on 71 minutes, his header from a perfectly delivered Joel Byrom corner coming back off the cross bar.

Ivan Toney replaced Moyo before Alex Nicholls broke clear only to see his shot saved by Jones.

Portsmouth pressed late on but the Cobblers saw out the remainder of the game, including six minutes of stoppage time, to book their place in the next round.
