New loan signings Tom Newey (Oxford) and Stewart Murdoch (Fleetwood) both came straight into the side with Ivan Toney replacing Alex Nicholls in attack. Former Cobblers striker Adebayo Akinfenwa started for Wimbledon.

The first couple of openings for the Cobblers came from Ben Tozer’s long throw, Ryan Cresswell’s effort deflected wide while Ivan Toney’s header was straight at James Shea.

Wimbledon had the ball in the back of the net on the half hour but Matt Tubbs strike was correctly ruled off-side as the score remained nil-nil.

The deadlock was broken on 32 minutes, Kaid Mohamed providing the finishing touch to a slick move involving Toney, Tozer and Lawson D’Ath.

Akinfenwa played in Tubbs just before half-time but his shot went over the bar to ensure Town led at the break.

After a somewhat fragmented start to the second half the Cobblers made a double change on 66 minutes, Emile Sinclair and Alex Nicholls replacing Ivan Toney and John-Joe O’Toole.

Akinfenwa headed wide under pressure from Tom Newey while for the Cobblers Nicholls met a Mohamed cross, Shea making the save.

The Cobblers doubled their lead in stoppage time, Alex Nicholls driving the ball home to seal the three points.
