With Tom Newey and Stewart Murdoch both cup-tied and Lawson D’Ath (ankle) added to the injury list, boss Chris Wilder was forced in to making a number of changes to the side for this Johnstone’s Paint Trophy area quarter-final tie. Alex Nicholls, Darren Carter, Ricky Ravenhill, Kaid Mohamed and John-Joe O’Toole all started, the fit again Marc Richards and Chris Hackett named on the bench.

Matt Duke made a good save to deny Chris Dagnall in the first sight at goal for either side. Jay Simpson fired over while Ben Tozer had the ball in the back of the net following a Cobblers free-kick only to be denied by the off-side flag.

It was Orient who drew first blood just before the half-hour mark, Jay Simpson firing the ball home low after latching onto a long ball over the top.

The Cobblers felt they should have had a penalty when O’Toole was on the wrong end of a high-footed challenge inside the area (that saw him wearing a head bandage for the second half) but the referee disagreed and awarded a goal kick.

Chris Wilder made a triple change on 56 minutes, Marc Richards, Chris Hackett and Kelvin Langmead coming on for Emile Sinclair, Ricky Ravenhill and Ryan Cresswell.

The changes seem to invigorate Town and Kaid Mohamed went close with a header following an inch-perfect Hackett cross. Chris Dagnall then shot against the post for Orient as the game neared the final ten minutes.

Richards curled a free-kick just past the post before Marvin Bartley doubled Orient’s lead and effectively sealed the League One side’s progress in the competition.
