LEON MCSWEENEY SIGNS FOR TOWN

30 January 2014

Northampton Town sign defender Leon McSweeney

Northampton Town have signed defender Leon McSweeney on a contract until the end of the season.

The 30-year old, who recently left Carlisle United, began his career with hometown club Cork City before making the move to England in 2001. He joined Leicester for an undisclosed fee but despite being a regular in the Foxes reserves he failed to make a first team appearance for the Foxes.

After being released by Leicester in 2003 McSweeney spent time at a number of non-league clubs before returning to Ireland in 2007.

He was soon back in England however, helping Stockport County gain promotion via the playoffs in 2007/08.

McSweeney continued his fine form in the Hatters League 1 campaign in 2008/09 with some eye catching performances in his new role as right back, scoring 5 goals to go with 8 assists.

Since leaving Edgeley Park in 2009 he has also played for Hartlepool United and Leyton Orient prior to joining Carlisle on a four-month deal in September 2013.
