Gregor Robertson replaced ankle-injury victim Joe Widdowson at left-back in the only change to the side for this re-arranged fixture. Former Sixfields loanees Marc Laird and Lee Barnard started for Southend.

The Cobblers had the lead on 6 minutes, Mathias-Kouo Doumbe scoring his second goal in as many games, this one a header from a Chris Hackett corner.

Southend equalised on 16 minutes, Michael Timlin slotting the ball home after going through one on one with Duke after beating the Cobblers defence.

With the visitors visibly boosted by their equaliser Barry Corr was denied at close range by a terrific block from Zander Diamond before the striker then headed wide from the ensuing corner.

Brennan Dickenson couldn’t keep his shot down after Diamond headed down a Hackett free-kick while at the other end a weak effort from Corr was comfortably gathered in by Matt Duke.

Chris Wilder made a double change ten minutes into the second half, Alan Connell and Ian Morris coming on for John Marquis and Brennan Dickenson.

Chris Hackett then put the Cobblers back in front, firing home right-footed after being set up superbly by Emile Sinclair.

As the Cobblers continued to play at a high intensity Hackett had the ball in the net again on 66 minutes after getting on the end of a chipped cross from Connell but his effort was ruled off-side.

The Cobblers final change came on 86 minutes, Gary Deegan replacing sponsors man of the match Emile Sinclair.

Four minutes of injury time were signalled but the Cobblers saw that out to record back-to-back league wins for the first time this season.
