John Marquis, Antonio German, Gary Deegan and Ben Tozer all came into the side as boss Chris Wilder made four changes from the team that started at Torquay. Emile Sinclair, Alan Connell and Brennan Dickenson dropped to the bench with Gregor Robertson ruled out by injury.

The match was preceded by a minutes applause in memory of former Preston North End and England winger Sir Tom Finney who passed away on Friday at the age of 91.

Steven Schumacher and Mark Roberts both tested Matt Duke in the opening ten minutes but the Cobblers custodian was equal to their efforts.

The home side did however take the lead on 22 minutes, Gareth Evans the goalscorer after getting on the end of a forward pass from Jamille Matt.

Chris Maxwell saved a John Marquis header as the Cobblers looked for an instant response, while Gary Deegan saw his goalbound effort blocked.

Chris Wilder made a change early in the second half with Emile Sinclair replacing Antonio German.

Leon McSweeney had a shot deflected behind on 65 minutes before a looping header from Mathias Doumbe landed on the roof of the net. A terrific save from Duke then denied Jamille Matt as Alan Connell came on for Ricky Ravenhill.

Fleetwood doubled their lead against the run of play on 79 minutes, Gareth Evans heading in a Jon Parkin cross.

There was to be no way back for the Cobblers after that as the remainder of the game passed without incident.
