The midfielder was injured in training in August and manager Chris Wilder confirmed the news that he won't play again this season.
"We were following the medical advice and he was progressing well," said Wilder.
"Sadly he has had a bit of a setback and requires surgery. He will have that on Tuesday and that will rule him out of the rest of the season.
"It is a real shame because we have missed him and we wish him a speedy recovery."
