Northampton Town travelled to Championship side AFC Bournemouth in the Capital One Cup second round on Tuesday night.
Boss Chris Wilder made four changes to the side that started against Shrewsbury with on-loan Tottenham goalkeeper Jordan Archer, Emile Sinclair, Lawson D’Ath and Ricky Ravenhill replacing Matt Duke, John-Joe O’Toole, Chris Hackett and Ivan Toney, who was rested from the matchday 18.
Bournemouth started brightly and nearly took the lead on 6 minutes, Eunan O'Kane’s shot cannoning against the underside of the Cobblers crossbar. Lee Collins then headed just wide from a Joel Byrom corner in the first opening for Town.
The home side’s pressure told on 21 minutes, Dan Gosling side-footing the ball home from 15-yards.
Brett Pitman made it 2-0 on the half hour, the Cherries striker keeping a cool head to slot the ball home after rounding debutant Archer.
The Cobblers had a chance to pull a goal back just before half-time but Marc Richards bullet header from a Kaid Mohamed cross went narrowly over the bar.
