AIDY REFUSES TO DEFEND ISHMEL

3 September 2013

The views of the Cobblers boss

Cobblers boss Aidy Boothroyd reflected on the Johnstone's Paint Trophy first round defeat at MK Dons.

"I'm very disappointed with Ishmel and one player tonight has let everybody down," he said.

"I could see it coming and I should have changed it but I don't want to be talking about Ishmel because there were some very good performances from our players out there tonight.

"Any manager worth his salt defends his players to the hilt but there comes a time when players do things that are just unacceptable and indefensible.

"We didn't start particularly well but I felt we grew into the game and again I can't ask any more of the team.

"Everybody has to take responsibility for discipline but in my opinion that was the only red card we've had this season that has been deserved.

"I was very encouraged by Matty Harriott and he will put our two central midfielders under big pressure and he also gives us the option to play three in there.

"We are in a winning business but I'm looking at the big picture and that's why I've made the changes to the side that I have this season.

"We haven't got the results this season but over a long period of time we will and I know that because I've been in this position before.

"I know exactly what we've got to do and we've just got to get on with doing it.

"I haven't had a settled team yet this season for one reason or another but when that happens you have still got to pick up points.

"You have got to be strong mentally and we will keep going and keep working at it."
