Cobblers boss to use pain as a motivational force

Northampton Town manager Aidy Boothroyd will use the disappointment of Wembley as a motivational factor when the Cobblers next season.

“I’m really pleased with the progress we’ve made this season but I was bitterly disappointed in the manner of the way we lost at Wembley," said Boothroyd

“I don’t think I will ever get over that, that’s not to say that I’m going to wallow and sulk about it but I will be using how I felt and how the players felt as motivation.

“I don’t want to be a nearly man again and I don’t want the players to be that.

“Whilst I’m very pleased overall with what has gone on this season I think we need to improve and we need to make sure that we go one better next time.

“We have got some good lads here but we need to add to the squad and we need to be better.

“Expectations will be higher next season but that’s a tribute to the progress that we have made over the last 18 months.

“We were slow starters last year and we had our trials and tribulations with the injury to Alex Nicholls for one but he’ll be back in November and the players will be stronger, wiser and fitter for everything that happened.

“It will be a new team again next season but it will be a better team.

“We’ve got some work to do to get to the standards that we got to in the second half of the season and that will take a bit of time.

“The football world is littered with teams who have a great season and then struggle the following season and it’s important that when we come back for pre-season we put what has happened this season to bed and move on.

“We weren’t that far away this year but I think you have always got to be looking forward.”
