Plus Cobblers boss happy with progress of squad

Northampton Town boss Aidy Boothroyd is pleased with the way his squad is coming together, and the progress of Academy prospect Connor Roberts.

“I’m really pleased with the way the squad is shaping up but we’re not finished yet," he said.

“We’re not that far away from having a really strong 16 or 18 who can really go and compete.

“I think we still need to bring in a striker and we may also need a player who can play at centre back and at right back just so that we are covered and I like to have a squad with players who can play in a variety of different positions.

“Connor Roberts did really well in Croatia and I want the young players to see that there is a pathway for them through to the first team.

“Connor won’t be ready for the first team this year, I’m convinced about that but I’m sure in the future we have got a really good player on our hands.

“Training and playing in youth games are nothing like the real thing and that’s why I think it is disappointing that the loan system is coming to an end. It’s vital for the development of young players that they experience real football.

“Lewis Hornby did really well for us last season and I want to see a lot more of him. He’s a terrific type, he doesn’t give a lot away and at the same time he is a really good "
