There were two changes to the side that started at Burton on Boxing Day with Danny Emerton and Matty Harriott replacing Darren Carter (suspended) and the injured Izale McLeod. Roy O'Donovan (ankle) was also unavailable for selection. Former Town loanee Danny East started for Portsmouth.
Pompey went close to breaking the deadlock after just 9 minutes, Jed Wallace curling a shot against the Cobblers crossbar.
A looping long throw from Ben Tozer caused Trevor Carson in the Portsmouth goal all sorts of problems midway through the first half but to his relief the ball came back off the bar before being cleared to safety.
The Cobblers dreadful run of injuries then continued with Luke Norris the latest victim, David Moyo coming on in his place.
After a bright start to the second half Matty Harriott saw a shot saved by Carson after an initial effort from Deegan had been blocked. A Chris Hackett cross on 66 minutes was then headed over by Moyo.
Caretaker boss Andy King made a change as the game entered the final 8 minutes, Ishmel Demontagnac coming on for Danny Emerton.
A ball from Demontagnac set Moyo clear on 89 minutes but despite appeals for a foul by a Portsmouth defender the referee waved play on and the game ended goalless.
