The Cobblers kicked off their 2013/14 Sky Bet League 2 campaign with a trip to York City.

Summer signings Matt Duke, Kevin Amankwaah, Matt Heath, Gary Deegan, Danny Emerton, Ian Morris and Darren Carter were all named in the starting line-up with JJ Hooper among the substitutes. Injured quintet Kelvin Langmead, Chris Hackett, Alex Nicholls, Clive Platt and Lewis Hornby were all unavailable for selection.

With the Cobblers in their new black away shirts Ian Morris captained the side in Langmead's absence.

Ashley Chambers had an early shot palmed away by Matt Duke. York created another chance for Chambers on 28 minutes but there was no power in his low shot which was saved comfortably by the Cobblers custodian.

Gary Deegan had the Cobblers first shot on goal of the new campaign but the former Hibernian midfielder's effort went just wide.

York had a late spell of pressure at the end of the first half but Duke saved Craig Clay's shot before the home side had a goal disallowed for a foul.

Chambers had another chance for York at the start of the second half but the lively winger shanked his shot over the bar when well-placed in front of goal.

Roy O'Donovan then smashed a shot against the York City crossbar after being played in by a terrific throughball from Darren Carter. There were questions that the ball may have crossed the line but the assistant referee said no.

Richard Cresswell, already on a booking, then went to ground in the Cobblers area. The referee waved away his claims for a penalty but didn't take any action against him for simulation.

The Cobblers were reduced to ten men on 74 minutes, Darren Carter dismissed after receiving a second yellow card.

Ryan Bowman could only find the side netting on 83 minutes as Nigel Worthington's side looked to make the most of their numerical advantage.

York took the lead on 90 minutes, Ryan Jarvis with the shot to beat Matt Duke. Aidy Boothroyd then made a change with JJ Hooper replacing Danny Emerton.

Three minutes of injury time followed but despite putting in a resolute performance the Cobblers couldn't quite see the game out and it was York who claimed the opening day victory.
