Adebayo Akinfenwa and Jake Robinson came into the side, replacing Ishmel Demontagnac (hamstring) and Nathan Cameron. Clarke Carlisle lined up against his former club while Chris Doig, who spent four seasons at Sixfields between 2005 and 2009, started on the bench for Nigel Worthington’s side.
Ben Tozer tested Michael Ingham on 5 minutes after being played in by Akinfenwa but the York goalkeeper did well to turn the ball behind.
Ashley Chambers then fired York in front two minutes later, converting past Lee Nicholls from close range.
Nicholls made a good save on 23 minutes to tip over a drilled shot from Matty Blair.
Blair then spurned a glorious opportunity to double York’s lead, his shot from close range coming back off the post following a goalmouth scramble. The Minstermen were then forced into making a change with Jason Walker replacing Richard Cresswell.
Ingham made a finger-tip save to deny Robinson as the game approached half-time.
Luke Guttridge replaced Chris Hackett on 63 minutes in the Cobblers first change.
Akinfenwa used his power to create an opening for Robinson who under pressure shot wide. Clive Platt then came on for Joe Widdowson moments before Akinfenwa headed over.
Roy O’Donovan had a shot saved by Ingham on 83 minutes as the Cobblers pressed hard for an equaliser.
With Town pushing forward though they were left short at the back and Yorkk’s lead was doubled on 86 minutes when Matty Blair’s cross-shot went in off John Johnson.
David Moyo came on for Robinson as Aidy Boothroyd made his third and final substitution. A good save from Nicholls denied Chambers to keep the scoreline at 2-0.
That was to be the last action of note as the Cobblers extraordinary run of home wins came to an end.
