The Cobblers cruised through to round 3 of the FA Youth Cup on Wednesday evening, beating York City 5-0 at Sixfields, recording their fifth successive victory and their sixth consecutive clean sheet in the process.

The first effort of the evening came from the visitors, with Chris Dickinson testing the palms of Dean Snedker with a low drive that the Cobblers keeper pushed away to safety.

The Cobblers, who were without the rested Lewis Hornby, came close on 16 minutes. A fiercely struck free kick from David Moyo was parried by visiting keeper Josh Archer but Callum Powell couldn’t direct the rebound goalwards.

Craig Hinton’s side survived a goalmouth scramble on 25 minutes. Firstly Snedker blocked from Dickinson, but the rebound fell kindly for his York strike partner Harry Coates who beat the keeper with an overhead kick, only for Cobblers centre back Harry Mattock to volley off the line.

The Cobblers took the lead on 34 minutes, and it owed a lot to the blistering pace of Callum Powell. Powell went past a number of players cutting in from the left and fed David Moyo, who slotted a composed finish past the keeper from 15 yards.

Dickinson headed a cross over the bar, before the Cobblers doubled their advantage. Ivan Toney burst through the York defence and was brought down by keeper Archer. Toney picked himself up to score from the spot on the very stroke of half time.

Ivan Toney got his second and the Cobblers third on 54 minutes, supplying a cute finish from a tight angle from a far post corner.

Ben Middleton headed over for York as they tried to find a way back into the tie, while Reece Kelly drove into the side netting from 25 yards although Snedker appeared to have it covered.

Any lingering doubts about the result were put to bed on 74 minutes as Ivan Toney completed his hat-trick. Again he owed a debt of gratitude to team mate Callum Powell who charged down the left, riding a foul in the process, delivering a low cross that was perfect for Toney to run on to and he fired home from the edge of the area.

Toney’s history making week got even better minutes later when he lobbed the keeper for his fourth and the Cobblers fifth goal, ensuring there was no way back for the beaten Minstermen. The Cobblers can now look forward to a home tie against Canvey Island or AFC Totton in the third round.
