Clarke Carlisle came straight back into the side having rejoined the club 24 hours earliler. Ben Tozer shifted across to right-back with Danny East dropping to the bench. Louis Moult (back from suspension) was also named among the substitutes alongside Emyr Huws who had recovered from illness.

Kevin Ellison rattled the post from 20 yards for Morecambe on 11 minutes while at the other end Barry Roche did well to tip away a fiercely struck Chris Hackett free-kick.

Hackett cut inside before flashing a shot just wide as the first half reached the midway point. The Cobblers then had strong appeals for a penalty turned down when a strike from Jake Robinson appeared to be blocked by the raised arm of a Morecambe player.

The Cobblers took the lead on 57 minutes, Adebayo Akinfenwa heading in from a Ben Tozer long throw.

The lead was soon doubled when from another Tozer throw on 61 minutes Kevin Ellison diverted the ball into his own net.

Aidy Boothroyd made a change on 72 minutes with Clive Platt coming on for Akinfenwa. Louis Molt then replaced Jake Robinson.

Emyr Huws came on for Lewis Hornby on 81 minutes as the Cobblers made their third and final substitution. Gary McDonald should have done better for Morecambe on 85 minutes but the midfielder shot wide.

Louis Moult had the ball in the net but the goal was ruled out as the referee had been quick to blow for a free kick as Moult hit the shot. However it mattered not as Ishmel Demontagnac curled in a delightful free-kick in the 90th minute to make it 3-0 and round off a good night for the upwardly mobile Cobblers.
