Cobblers one of first teams to play at St George’s Park

On Wednesday, Northampton Town's youth team became one of the first teams to play at the new National Football Centre at St George’s Park in Burton.

The Cobblers Under 18s took on their Burton counterparts in a pre-season friendly as part of the testing of the pitches at the new facility ahead of its official opening.

The Cobblers won the game 4-0, but Academy Manager Trevor Gould said the facilities there were 'breathtaking.'

"It was a real honour to be one of the first teams to play there," he said.

"We trained there in the morning, then we had lunch before we played on the main Wembley pitch in the afternoon.

"They are breathtaking facilities and it was great for the boys to experience them. The hotel, the changing rooms and pitches are all amazing and this is a facility that the country can be very proud of. It is a huge step forward for football in this country and will give young players every opportunity to develop to the highest possible standard."

The Cobblers goals came from David Moyo and Claudio Dias who both scored twice.
