AIDY - CONNOR COULD GET CHELSEA CHANCE

27 July 2012

Gaffer looking ahead to Sixfields clash

Aidy Boothroyd says that trialist goalkeeper Connor Roberts may get another chance to impress against the Chelsea Under 21 team at Sixfields on Saturday.

"Connor may play, or I may adjust things," said the Cobblers boss.

"I have been really pleased with him the last couple of days and I think he has done very well. I think it is difficult for anyone to come in on trial; he’s been here for a couple of days and has certainly impressed everybody. I don’t think he is a number one starter just yet, but he dealt well with everything that came his way on Wednesday evening.

"Neal Kitson has got a situation where he has had to go home, his family lives in New York and he has had to go home to deal with a family matter and he will be back on Sunday where we will take it from there. Connor is here so we can have a good look at him, and I will have a few decisions to make depending on how well Shane Higgs does. He is making good progress, but the last thing I want to do to Shane is put him under pressure to play for an injury that he has at the age he is, and he won’t thank me for saying that! I want to make sure that he is 100% right because we have seen what a good goalkeeper he is.

"We will certainly make a couple of signings before the Cardiff game. We have some good individuals and it is about making them into a good team, and the next few games we have got will help us do that.

"Over pre-season we will make some mistakes, we’ll get some things wrong but the whole point of it is that we get some minutes into the players’ legs and get the mental understanding of what he have got to get right for the game against Cardiff and against Rochdale for the start of the league season."
