Northampton Town’s youth team took on their Canvey Island counterparts in the third round of the FA Youth Cup on a bitterly cold night at Sixfields.

Canvey took the lead on 6 minutes when from a free kick the unfortunate Jordan Chambers sliced the ball into his own net while trying to clear.

Dean Snedker did well to save at the feet of Ronnie Winn as Canvey countered before the Cobblers were awarded a 10th minute penalty when David Moyo was fouled by the Canvey goalkeeper. Ivan Toney stepped upto take the spot kick only to see his effort come back off the underside of the crossbar.

Joe Langenhan did well to close down a shot from Moyo on 18 minutes as the Cobblers continued to press hard for an equaliser.

Moyo headed against the bar just after the half hour mark and as play continued Harry Mattock saw a header tipped over. Langenhan then touched another header on to the bar before Toney tucked the ball home. However his effort was ruled off-side as Canvey clung on.

The first chance of the second half came on 49 minutes but Moyo’s shot was well saved by Langenhan.

The Cobblers equalised on 64 minutes, David Moyo volleying in from 12-yards following a Callum Powell cross.

Ronnie Winn headed wide on 72 minutes in a rare foray forward for the visitors. A great run from Claudio Dias on 78 minutes then drew a low save from the Canvey keeper.

Callum Powell fired Town in front on 81 minutes, calmly slotting the ball home after Langenhan could only parry Moyo’s initial effort.

Craig Hinton’s side saw the game out after that and with the temperature dropping as quickly as the ratings for X Factor the Cobblers youngsters made club history by booking their place in the fourth round for the very first time.
