TOWN BRING IN ARTELL

13 August 2012

Experienced defender is latest new addition

Northampton Town have signed former Crewe Alexandra captain David Artell on a 2 year contract.

The 6ft 3in 31 year old Artell began his career with hometown club Rotherham United, making his debut as a substitute in a 2–0 defeat by Swansea City at Vetch Field on 12 October 1999.

He has gone on to make more than 400 senior appearances, scoring 37 goals enjoying spells with Shrewsbury, Mansfield, Chester, Morecambe and Crewe. The Alex were his last club, and he made 82 appearances in two years, captaining the side to promotion thanks a play off final victory at Wembley in May.

" In David we are talking about the man who lifted the play off trophy at Wembley a couple of months ago ," said boss Aidy Boothroyd.

"He had the chance to move to a club on his doorstep in Port Vale and he took it.

"Things didn't work out there but we tried to bring David in earlier this summer, it didn't happen then but now we have got a lucky break.

"I sold the club to David and fortunately he has brought in to what we are trying to do.

"He is a senior figure, a leader, he has been promoted three times, he is great in the dressing room, he is a voice on the pitch, he knows this level inside out and I think he is the voice who will connect us together and give the whole club a lift.

"He will help the defenders around him, he will help those in front of him and I know that when we line up in the tunnel we will have a good physical size about us, but we will have some good footballers in the side as well."
