The Cobblers boss on Saturday's draw
Cobblers boss Aidy Boothroyd reflected on the 3-3 draw with Southend.
“It was entertaining if nothing else but if I’m honest I didn’t think we deserved anything out of today,” he said.
“We defended really badly as a team and not only did we gift Southend three goals but we’ve gifted them a point as well.
“Of course we have got to give the opposition credit but it felt like in a way we beat ourselves today.
“If we’d have won the game then we would have all been euphoric but in a way it would have just have masked a few things that we need to sort out.
“I can’t knock the players character but we are still yet to gel as a team and we are a way off being as good as we can be.
“We got too deep in the last five minutes and at 3-2 up we have got to be brave enough to step up and see the game out. I thought we were sat on the back row of the stand we were that deep.
“Maybe on reflection I could have freshened things up a little bit but the team have done so well in the first three games that I wanted to stick with the same side.
“We are a new and developing team but at 3-2 up against the run of play we should have seen it out.
“You get what you work for and in the end our character was good but we have still got a lot of work to do as a group. However, we are still unbeaten and we must build on that.”
