YOUTH TEAM NARROWLY BEATEN BY LATE GOAL

EFL Youth Alliance action

14 August 2021

Northampton Town Under 18s conceded a late winner as they lost 1-0 at home to Sutton United Under 18s in the EFL Youth Alliance League South East on Saturday morning.

Coach Shane Goddard named the same team that beat Leyton Orient Under 18s last week.

Sutton started on top, but neither side created any clear opportunities in a goalless first half.

An attacker volleyed wide from close range, and James Dadge held a shot from the edge of the area moments later.

Soon after, another attacker was played in, but his shot was wide of the far post.

Dadge was called into action again before the break, tipping an effort over after an attacker ran through on goal.

The second half was more even, but the match became scrappy and there were few chances of note.

Ethan Lack curled over from the edge of the box on the hour mark, and Josh Tomlinson blocked a header on the line at the other end.

The Sutton winner came with four minutes of normal time remaining, when an attacker took the ball down and fired home at the back post.

The youth team host Stevenage in a fortnight.

Starting XI - Dadge (GK); Smith-Howes, Irwin, Tomlinson, Lashley (sub Lekuti, HT); Lack, Hill, Abimbola (C); Watkins-Robinson (sub O’Keeffe, 73), Connor, Ngwa. Unused subs - Shackleton (GK), Sarpong, Duggan.
