YOUTH TEAM EDGED OUT OF EFL YOUTH ALLIANCE CUP ON PENALTIES

EFL Youth Alliance Cup action

17 September 2019

Northampton Town’s youth team welcomed AFC Wimbledon to Moulton College on Tuesday for an EFL Youth Alliance Cup tie.

On a sunny September afternoon, Jon Brady’s side took an early lead. A powerful run from Michael Harding was ended when he was fouled in the area, allowing skipper Haydn Price to score from the penalty spot.

The visitors were back on terms almost immediately however, when the unfortunate Josh Flanagan sent an attempted clearance beyond keeper Lewi Patching to level things up.

Urijah Gordon-Douglas headed over and Price tested the Wimbledon keeper from distance but the first half ended with matters all square.

The Cobblers were awarded a second spot kick mid way through the second half when Harding was once again fouled. On this occasion however, the keeper went the right way and tipped Price’s penalty around the post.

As the game approached the final ten minutes, Liam Cross and Ethan Johnston both went close, and it was the latter who did find the net with two minutes to play, sliding home a low finish after being played in by Harding.

AFC Wimbledon drew level five minutes in to stoppage time when the keeper, forward for a corner, headed home. That took the tie to penalties, and it was the visitors who progressed to the next round.

Cobblers: Lewi Patching, Will Bates, Jacob Ballinger, Haydn Price, Josh Flanagan, Jordan Fowler, Ryan Smith, Tom Scott, Urijah Gordon-Douglas, Caleb Chukmewenka, Michael Harding
Subs: Richie Bailey, Liam Cross, Ethan Johnston, Max Dyche
