Shaun McWilliams came in for Jack Sowerby and Tyreece Simpson replaced Louis Appere for the visit of Barnsley. Sowerby missed out after picking up a knock the previous week while Aaron McGowan was unavailable for selection due to personal reasons. Jon Brady did however have Ryan Haynes back on the bench.

Last season’s losing play-off finalists Barnsley struck early on, Callum Styles with a fine first time volley to beat Lee Burge inside the opening five minutes.

Skipper Jon Guthrie, making his 100th appearance for the club, saw a bullet header saved by former Cobbler Liam Roberts in a good response from the home side. Roberts was called upon again to turn behind a 25-yard volley from Mitch Pinnock just before the half-hour mark but it was Barnsley who led at the break.

Ben Fox came on midway through the second half, replacing Tyreece Simpson. Louis Appere then came on for McWilliams before Lee Burge made a terrific save to tip a header from Devante Cole onto the crossbar.

Manny Monthe came on for Akin Odimayo in Brady’s third change but with 88 minutes on the clock the prolific Devante Cole scored on the break to double Barnsley’s lead.

Louis Appere pulled a goal back for the Cobblers deep into injury time but with very little time left Barnsley held on to claim the three points.

BIG CROWD EXPECTED AT SIXFIELDS - PLEASE ARRIVE EARLY

Important information ahead of Saturday's game

22 September 2023

There is plenty happening at Sixfields on Saturday!

Please do arrive early as another big crowd is expected. In addition, please note that Junction 15a of the M1 and the surrounding area is closed all weekend for roadworks. If that is part of your usual journey, please find an alternative route.

The turnstiles at Sixfields will open at 1.30pm and entry in to the stadium is welcomed at any point from that time onwards.

Please look to enter the turnstiles and to take your seats as soon as possible to avoid any delays particularly in the busy fifteen minutes prior to kick off. While we will do all we can to ensure smooth and efficient entry in to the game, ticket and security checks must take place and arriving late may mean you miss kick off.

The north gravel car park will be open from 11am while the car park at Duston Mill, which is not operated by the club but is available for supporters to park in, (sat nav NN5 5FP) will also be open. Please do not park in the car parks of other business premises in or around Sixfields. There may well be parking restrictions in place.

Carr's Bar will be open before and after the game (home supporters only), as will the club store with the new PUMA home, away and third kits on sale. The outside bar at Carr's Bar may be open but will be weather dependent.

The ticket office will also be open from 10am until kick off and again after the game until the queue has cleared. Please note from 2pm the ticket office will be dealing with Barnsley tickets only. Sales for other games will resume after the match.
