Northampton Town were in midweek action with a tough trip to in-form Blackpool. Having initially named an unchanged side, Jon Brady was forced into a late change with Akin Odimayo replacing Patrick Brough. Former Cobblers keeper Richard O’Donnell was on the bench for the hosts.

Dan Grimshaw made a terrific early save to deny Marc Leonard while it needed a vital interception from Shaun McWilliams to prevent Karamoko Dembele getting a shot away. James Husband volleyed over from a corner and but for some good work from Max Thompson, Jake Beesley could have been in for the opening goal for Blackpool.

Beesley, played in by Dembele, spurned a good chance midway through the first half, shooting straight at Thompson with Jordan Rhodes soon following suit.

The Cobblers, backed by a vociferous away following, broke the deadlock just after the half hour mark, Sam Hoskins setting up Kieron Bowie who slotted the ball low past Grimshaw.

Owen Dale arrowed a strike narrowly over the angle of post and bar as the Tangerines went close to an equaliser but the Cobblers went agonisingly close to a second goal in first half stoppage time, Hoskins' cross/shot just wide of the post.

Blackpool equalised on 65 minutes with a goal that came out of nowhere, Jordan Rhodes on the end of a cross to head home.

Substitute Kyle Joseph flicked a shot just wide as the home side looked to turn the scoreline on its head but the Cobblers re-took the lead on 75 minutes, Sam Hoskins scoring from an acute angle after capitalising on a loose back pass.

Mitch Pinnock almost caught Grimshaw off his line with 89 minutes on the clock but Jon Brady’s side had done enough to claim a terrific three points on the road.
