Sam Hoskins, Aaron McGowan and Sam Sherring came into the side as boss Jon Brady made three changes for the visit of Newport County. Brady was still without six of his first team squad for the 2pm kick-off with Ben Fox and Danny Hylton suspended, Tyler Magloire, Josh Eppiah and Ali Koiki injured and Jonny Maxted missing through personal reasons. Cardiff City striker Chanka Zimba, who had a loan spell at Sixfields last season, was amongst the substitutes for Newport.
Having picked up four points from Graham Coughlan’s first two games in charge, Newport came to Sixfields in confident mood and they took the lead from a long throw inside two minutes, Omar Bogle scoring from close range.
An Adam Lewis free kick drew a comfortable save from Lee Burge while for the Cobblers, Mitch Pinnock, fresh from signing a new contract, saw a shot blocked at close range by a Newport defender.
The Exiles were posing a real threat and it needed a good reaction save from Burge to prevent Mickey Demetriou doubling the visitors' lead. Burge then pulled off another fine stop to deny Bogle one-on-one before recovering quickly to also save from Nathan Moriah-Welsh on the follow-up.
Livewire Bogle had a shot tipped on to the post by Burge in a real purple patch of pressure from the visitors but having survived that spell, the Cobblers won a corner from which Jon Guthrie headed over and Kieron Bowie drew a save from Joe Day following a good move by the home side.
Jon Brady made a triple change for the second half with Jack Sowerby, Akin Odimayo and former Newport defender Ryan Haynes replacing Marc Leonard, Harvey Lintott and Kieron Bowie.
Hoskins had a shot saved by Day at the near post after combining well with Louis Appere but with twenty minutes to play the Cobblers still trailed 1-0.
Referee Thomas Kirk was unconvinced when Hoskins went down in the area before Zimba came on for goalscorer Bogle in a change for Newport. McGowan then made way for Liam Cross in the Cobblers fourth change.
Town kept probing and in stoppage time Sam Hoskins scored his 12th goal of the season to rescue a point, Odimayo providing the assist for the Cobblers top goalscorer who drilled a shot into the bottom corner from 10-yards.
