League leaders Leyton Orient were the first visitors to Sixfields in 2023 and boss Jon Brady made three changes with Josh Eppiah, Kieron Bowie and Tyler Magloire all coming into the side. Aaron McGowan and Ben Fox dropped to the bench while Louis Appere joined Ali Koiki on the injury list. Jack Sowerby remained absent due to illness. The passing of footballing great Pele was marked prior to kick off with a minute of applause held in tribute.

Orient were forced into a change when Dan Happe was unable to shake off a knock and the Cobblers were also dealt an injury blow midway through the first half with McGown replacing Magloire.

Lee Burge made a terrific save to deny Darren Pratley the opening goal, tipping over the experienced midfielder’s fiercely struck volley. At the other end Eppiah just failed to get on the end of a good knock down from Jon Guthrie before the Cobblers were dealt a further injury blow when Shaun McWilliams was also unable to continue, Fox coming on for the final few minutes of the first half.

Ben Fox fired the Cobblers in front on 51 minutes, the first half substitute who was sent off in the goalless draw between the two sides at Brisbane Road back in October, finding the bottom corner just moments after a terrific initial save from Lawrence Vigouroux denied Sam Hoskins.

Orient thought they had equalised when Omar Beckles forced the ball home from close range but after speaking to his assistant referee Chris Pollard correctly ruled an O’s player had been offside in the build-up. It was turning into a feisty second half and Orient boss Richie Wellens was shown a yellow card for his protestations against a decision before Theo Archibald was booked following a deliberate trip on Hoskins.

The Cobblers were managing the game extremely well and with the 90 minutes almost up Jon Brady whipped up the crowd to try and help his side close out the victory.

Omar Beckles was sent off in stoppage time for a nasty challenge on McGowan and after over eleven minutes of additional time the referee blew for full-time, the Cobblers kicking off the New Year with a well deserved and hard fought three points against the league leaders.
