Already without a number of players due to injury, the Cobblers were dealt a further hammer blow before the trip to Sutton United on Tuesday night with the news that captain Jon Guthrie had been ruled out for the rest of the season after picking up an injury in the draw at Carlisle.
Sam Sherring returned from injury to replace Guthrie, while Max Dyche was named on the bench. Sam Hoskins captained the side in Guthrie’s absence.
Playing into a strong wind in the first half, the Cobblers were posing a threat on the break but it was Sutton who went close to opening the scoring on 16 minutes when Alistair Smith’s volley from the edge of the area struck the post.
The Cobblers seemingly never ending injury woes worsened midway through the first half when Jack Sowerby was unable to continue and had to be replaced by Max Dyche.
Kieron Bowie dragged a shot wide after being played in by Mitch Pinnock and it was from a Pinnock long throw that the Cobblers took the lead on 32 minutes, Louis Appere snaffling his ninth goal of the campaign.
Sutton were back on level terms in first half stoppage time however, Donovan Wilson scoring from close range, the goal allowed to stand despite Cobblers protests for a foul on Will Hondermarck in the build-up.
Five minutes into the second half the Cobblers were back in front, Mitch Pinnock slamming the ball home after a cross in from Hoskins.
Kieron Bowie, who started the move for the goal before being fouled, was combining well with Appere and with the Cobblers not sitting back the pair both had chances to make it 3-1, Bowie firing just over while Appere had a shot saved by Jack Rose.
Sutton thought they had equalised for a second time on the night but the flag was quickly up for off-side as Shaun McWilliams came on for David Norman.
Hoskins made a vital interception to deny Omar Bugiel and Smith fired narrowly wide as the home side ramped up the pressure against the Cobblers makeshift defence.
It had been another superb battling performance from Jon Brady’s side and with the Cobblers fans in fine voice the referee blew for full-time, another three points on the board.
