Boss Jon Brady was unable to name the same starting XI for a fifth consecutive game with Sam Hoskins suspended for the visit of Carlisle United. Jordan Flores came into the side while Dylan Connolly missed out after testing positive for Covid-19. Carlisle, who appointed Keith Millen as their new manager in the week, included ex-Cobblers Rod McDonald and Brennan Dickenson, who had a loan spell at Sixfields back in 2014, in their side.
Carlisle started brightly and both Fraser Horsfall and Ali Koiki made important blocks in the opening ten minutes. Horsfall headed over from a Mitch Pinnock cross in the Cobblers first sight at goal.
Tristan Abrahams came on for Carlisle after Dickenson picked up an injury with the Cobblers also forced into a change when Aaron McGowan couldn’t continue, Dominic Revan coming on.
Kion Etete couldn’t quite get his head on a teasing ball in from Pinnock before Lewis Alessandra headed over a good chance for Carlisle.
The Cobblers made the breakthrough on 41 minutes when Paul Lewis turned home a cross from Koiki. Lewis finish capped a fine move from the Cobblers which started with Shaun McWilliams winning the ball in midfield before Koiki played a neat one-two with Pinnock.
Town started the second half very much on the offensive with Mark Howard saving from Lewis, Etete firing over and Jon Guthrie side-footing just wide.
Pressure was building on the Carlisle goal and Paul Lewis scored his second of the afternoon to double the Cobblers lead, the midfielder slotting the ball home after being played in by Etete.
Paul Lewis completed his hat-trick from the penalty spot after Jack Armer was penalised for handball, Howard given no chance as Lewis hammered his spot-kick past the Cumbrians goalkeeper.
Nicke Kabamba came on for Flores in Brady’s second change of the afternoon with McWilliams making way for Danny Rose soon after.
The rest of the game saw little incident as the Cobblers closed out their fourth win and fourth clean sheet on the bounce to, temporarily at least, move up to second in the table.
