Michael Harriman, Dylan Connolly and Danny Rose came into the Northampton Town side for the Emirates FA Cup first round replay away at Cambridge United. Jordan Flores and Mitch Pinnock dropped to the bench while Dominic Revan missed out through injury.

Kion Etete fired wide early on and the on-loan Spurs striker also had the ball in the back of the net only for the referee to point for a free-kick to Cambridge.

The Cobblers had started brightly but Cambridge took the lead against the run of play, Harvey Knibbs scoring from close range after Joe Ironside headed back across goal.

Liam Roberts made a superb save to deny Adam May but in a half where the Cobblers had seen a lot of the ball, Sam Smith doubled the home side’s lead, tapping in after his initial header had been saved.

Brady was forced into making a change before the break with Aaron McGowan replacing Harriman who had picked up a knock. Paul Lewis then did come close to pulling a goal back but his low shot was turned behind by Dimitar Mitov.

The half-time scoreline of 2-0 was harsh on the Cobblers and things got worse when Cambridge increased their lead early in the second half, Ben Worman firing a shot in off the post.

Danny Rose headed wide from a Sam Hoskins free-kick while Roberts made another fine stop to tip a shot from Knibbs on to the bar.

Nicke Kabamba and Mitch Pinnock came on in a double change midway through the second half and the Cobblers pulled a goal back when Danny Rose headed home a pin-point cross from McGowan.

The Cobblers continued to battle hard in the remaining time but Rose’s goal in the end proved to be only a consolation as Cambridge booked their place in the second round.
