Jon Brady shuffled his pack for the Carabao Cup first round tie at Championship side Coventry City, making eight changes to the starting XI. Paul Lewis kept his place in midfield with the centre-back pairing of Fraser Horsfall and Jon Guthrie also unchanged. There were starts for summer signings Jonny Maxted, Sid Nelson and Ali Koiki along with on-loan Spurs striker Kion Etete with Sam Hoskins also back in the side.

Coventry started brightly and took the lead on 13 minutes, Maxted given no chance as Tyler Walker pounced to score from close range. Jordan Shipley then spurned a chance to add a quick second, firing over when well-placed in front of goal.

As the Cobblers rallied, keeper Ben Wilson was alert to the danger with Danny Rose closing in while Etete just failed to apply the finishing touch to a Hoskins cross and Wilson made a good low save to keep out a drilled shot from Scott Pollock.

Rose struck the post with a low drive after some more good work by Etete who headed wide on the half hour after Hoskins latched onto a pin-point through-ball from Horsfall. The on-loan Spurs striker then saw another effort deflected behind by a covering defender with the keeper beaten as the Cobblers pressed hard for an equaliser.

Kion Etete got the Cobblers deservedly back on level terms on 52 minutes, showing a neat touch and emphatic finish after being played in by Rose.

Mitch Pinnock replaced Pollock and Nicke Kabamba came on for Rose either side of a terrific save from Maxted to deny Julien Dacosta. The Sky Blues then made a triple change, bringing on Martyn Waghorn, Josh Pask and Ian Maatsen.

The Cobblers were in front with 20 minutes to play, Etete getting the final touch after a Pinnock long throw caused chaos in the Coventry box.

Maxted made another good save as the game entered stoppage time but Etete’s second goal of the night proved to be the match winner and it was the Cobblers, backed by a terrific away following, who progressed through to the second round after coming from behind to knock out a team two divisions above them.
