Academy graduate Caleb Chukwuemeka made his full debut in the Cobblers' second round Carabao Cup tie away at Championship side Bristol City. Jonathan Mitchell started in goal with Sam Hoskins and Joe Martin also coming into the side. Joseph Mills was named on the bench having missed the opening league game through injury.

The home side were forced into an early change when their captain Tomas Kalas picked up a shoulder injury, Taylor Moore coming on in just the seventh minute.

Niclas Eliasson curled a free-kick against the post while Sam Hoskins saw a shot from 25-yards deflected behind in a tight opening first half. The Cobblers were more than holding their own and it wasn’t until the 38th minute that Jonathan Mitchell was tested for the first time on the night, the on-loan keeper making a good save to deny Antoine Semenyo from a tight angle.

Bristol City did make the breakthrough just before half-time however, Chris Martin heading home from close range and just before the break, Mitchell tipped over a header from Zak Vyner.

There was a defensive re-shuffle needed at the break with Morgan Roberts coming on for Luka Racic and not long into the second half City doubled their lead, Kasey Palmer with an accomplished finish after a good run into the area.

Chris Lines replaced Hoskins and Ethan Johnston came on for Benny Ashley-Seal in Keith Curle’s final two changes while City introduced the experienced Chris Brunt into the action.

Johnston’s introduction meant that following on from Scott Pollock he was the second player to have come through the club’s education programme to go on to play for the first team.

Palmer thought he had made it 3-0 but after a discussion between the officials his header was disallowed for off-side. Semenyo then headed over from point blank range before there was a chance for Chukwuemeka but he couldn’t quite keep his shot down after being played in by Lines.

Antoine Semenyo provided the finishing touch to a fine move involving Palmer and Steven Sessegnon to effectively rubber stamp City’s progression into the next round and they added a fourth goal late on, the impressive Palmer turning the ball home from close range.
