Alan Sheehan and Mickel Miller were both back from injury and named on the bench for Northampton Town’s trip to MK Dons as caretaker boss Jon Brady kept faith with the same starting XI that picked up a point at Ipswich in midweek.

The Cobblers got off to the perfect start and took the lead inside 90 seconds at Stadium:MK, Fraser Horsfall with a terrific volley from Mark Marshall’s free-kick.

Andrew Surman equalised with a stunning left-footed strike before the Cobblers had a chance to almost instantaneously re-take the lead, Sam Hoskins shooting just wide from long distance with the Dons goalkeeper stranded.

Danny Rose saw an effort comfortably saved and Marshall cracked a shot against the post from 30-yards with Fisher beaten as Jon Brady’s side continued to create chances in a bid to re-take the lead.

In a pulsating first half it was the Dons who scored the game’s next goal though, Will Grigg finding the bottom corner.

Brady made two changes at half-time with Ryan Watson on for Jack Sowerby and Ryan Edmondson for Danny Rose.

Watson made an immediate impact with the Cobblers back on level terms less than a minute into the second half, the midfielder with a fine strike into the corner against his former club.

Marshall had a shot blocked at close range by Fisher with Watson again involved before Lloyd Jones headed wide from the ensuing corner.

Jonathan Mitchell saved comfortably from Matt O'Riley with Dons then making a double change, bringing on Ben Gladwin and Cameron Jerome. Mickel Miller returned to action replacing Shaun McWilliams.

Edmondson struck the post after getting in behind the Dons defence with the Cobblers again denied by the woodwork. It was only a temporary reprieve for the home side however with the Cobblers deservedly back in front when Peter Kioso headed home Marshall’s free-kick.

Cameron Jerome was on the end of a ball over the top to make it 3-3 and on a topsy-turvy afternoon the Dons were back in front on 88 minutes through substitute Charlie Brown, although the goal came from a free kick that appeared to be taken with the ball rolling.

Caleb Chukwuemeka and Alan Sheehan came on as the clock ticked over to 90 and the home side hung on for all three points, Joseph Mills and Sheehan both seeing efforts saved by Fisher in stoppage time.
