Hakeem Odoffin replaced Jordan Turnbull in the only change made by Keith Curle for the midweek trip to Newport County.

The home side started brightly and took the lead after five minutes through Josh Sheehan, who found the bottom corner with a low strike from the edge of the area.

The Cobblers weren’t behind for long though and Andy Williams was on the end of a David Buchanan free-kick to smash home the equaliser.

David Cornell made a good low save to prevent Jamille Matt heading the home side back in front but it proved only to be a temporary reprieve for the Cobblers.

Dan Butler delivered a free-kick that Jamille Matt converted and when Padraig Amond tapped home from close range following a quick break Newport lead 3-1.

Williams looped a header over the bar after again combining with Buchanan at the end of an action packed first 45 minutes.

Billy Waters came on for the second half in place of John-Joe O’Toole as Keith Curle made a tactical switch to 4-4-2. The half started in a low key fashion and with an hour gone the Cobblers made their second change, Daniel Powell on for Kevin van Veen.

There was a further moment of danger for the Cobblers when Ash Taylor made an important block to deny Jamille Matt.

Powell shot wide as Morgan Roberts came on for the final few minutes, Sam Hoskins making way. The Cobblers were pushing hard and it took a vital interception from Mark O’Brien to deny Williams while Odoffin headed over from a corner. Town kept pressing into stoppage time but the damage had been done in the first half and Newport clinched the three points.
