Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink made half a dozen changes for the Cobblers second group fixture in the Checkatrade Trophy. Summer signing Sam Foley and Lewis McGugan, a free agent signed the day before the game, both made their debuts with two academy players, James Gillard and Camron McWilliams, younger brother of Shaun, named on the bench.

Billy Waters looked to make an early impact, doing well to win a corner and also seeing a deflected shot saved by Connor O’Malley. A diving save from David Cornell was required to keep out a Danny Lloyd free-kick and maintain parity midway through the first half.

Peterborough took the lead on 43 minutes, Danny Lloyd scoring from close range after David Cornell could parried a shot from distance from Ricky Miller.

O’Malley saved a shot from McGugan and Lloyd had a free-kick turned behind by Cornell as the game neared the hour mark.

Marc Richards had a shot tipped over by O’Malley as the Cobblers pressed for an equaliser and they were back on level terms from the subsequent corner taken by Yaser Kasim, home defender Jack Baldwin appearing to turn the ball into his own net.

Jack Marriott poked a shot just wide and Richards headed over in the closing stages but there was to be no late winner for either side and for the second time in the group the Cobblers would take part in a penalty shoot-out.
