JIMMY FLOYD HASSELBAINK LOOKING FOR EMIRATES FA CUP PROGRESS

Cobblers boss aiming for second round spot

14 November 2017

Cobblers boss Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink is keen to try and progress through Tuesday's Emirates FA Cup first round replay at Scunthorpe United.

The winner of Tuesday night’s tie will face a trip to Doncaster Rovers in the second round and Hasselbaink wants to make sure it is the Cobblers visiting the Keepmoat in early December.

“We are going to try and put a really strong team together and we want to progress," he said.

“It was a really good team performance on Saturday but we need to keep on going.

“We are just taking every game at a time and we are just concentrating on the next one.

“Saturday has gone now but we want to keep moving forward. A lot went right at Oxford and we need to keep doing those things.

“Chris Long is doing well and we still believe that he will get even stronger. He needed that goal at the weekend and we are working hard to try and create more chances for him.

“We still have things we can improve on but if we keep on performing like we did on Saturday we will win matches.”

After a goalless draw at Sixfields the Cobblers travelled to Scunthorpe United for a replay in the Emirates FA Cup first round, just four days before the sides were due to meet again in the league.

Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink again rung the changes with a number of players including Matt Grimes (suspended), Regan Poole (international duty) and Daniel Powell (hamstring) unavailable for selection. David Cornell replaced Matt Ingram in goal with QPR not giving permission for the on-loan keeper to play in the Emirates FA Cup. Leon Barnett, back from an Achilles injury, was named on the bench.

Scunthorpe started the game on the front foot but the Cobblers had a shot on goal in the 13th minute, Matt Gilks saving a Matt Crooks shot from 25-yards. Lee Novak meanwhile headed over from a Hakeeb Adelakun free-kick in a good chance for the home side.

Cornell saved well from Adelakun as the game neared the half hour mark with centre-back Cameron Burgess unable to get his header on target from the subsequent corner.

The home side took the lead on 33 minutes, Hakeeb Adelakun with an unstoppable strike from just outside the area. Funso Ojo was then denied by Cornell on the stretch as Scunthorpe went close to a second before half-time.

A close range header from Burgess was well-saved by Cornell to keep the scoreline at 1-0 while Crooks curled a shot just wide of the post after Sam Foley’s initial effort had been blocked.

Foley headed straight at Gilks and Crooks went agonisingly close to converting a Marc Richards cross as the Cobblers continued to press for an equaliser, looking to take the tie into extra-time. It wasn’t to be for the Cobblers on the night though as Scunthorpe claimed the victory and a second round tie away at Doncaster Rovers.
