COBBLERS BEAT CAMBRIDGE IN FA YOUTH CUP

Posted on: Wed 12 Nov 2008

Northampton Town's youth team were in FA Youth Cup action on Wednesday night as they took on Cambridge United at the Abbey Stadium.

The Cobblers won the second round tie 2-0 thanks to goals from Shawn Richards and Ross Oulton and will now host either Solihull Moors or Tranmere Rovers at Sixfields in round 3.

"It was a great team performance," said youth team coach Sean Parrish.

"We didn't create too many chances in the first half but we got a goal just before half-time. It was a bit of a sloppy goal from Cambridge's point of view but Shawn Richards gambled and got his rewards.

"We kept our shape well in the second half and we defended well when we needed to. We cleared one off the line just before we got our second which came about eight minutes from time.

"We stuck at it in the second half, kept our shape well and overall I was really pleased with the lad's performance.

"We've got a home tie in the next round now and it's a great opportunity for the lads to play at Sixfields. There is always a great atmosphere under the lights at Sixfields and the lads will really look forward to that.

"We don't know who we will be playing yet but we will go and watch the game between Solihull and Tranmere next week so that we can do our homework."
