Northampton Town's youth team were in action on Wednesday night as they took on Rushden & Diamonds at Nene Park in the first round of this seasons FA Youth Cup.

The Cobblers booked their place in the second round with a 2-1 victory thanks to goals from Joe Benjamin and Shawn Richards.

"I'm obviously pleased that we're in the next round," said youth team coach Sean Parrish.

"It was a good battling performance from the lads between two evenly matched sides.

"I was a bit disappointed to go in at half-time at 1-1 after Joe Benjamin had put us in front but we started the second half really brightly and got back in front through Shawn Richards.

"We've got Cambridge United away in the next round now and that will be another tough game. I've heard that they are a pretty decent side so we will obviously have to do our homework on them if we want to get through to the third round."
