The Cobblers youth team welcomed Tiverton Town to Sixfields on Tuesday night for their FA Youth Cup second round tie.
Despite Tiverton's late arrival at the ground due to traffic problems the game kicked off on time on what was a cold, misty night at Sixfields.
Sean Parrish's side had the first chance of the game on 6 minutes but, after the ball fell to Sam Maude on the edge of the penalty area following a well worked Cobblers corner, his low driven effort was cleared to safety by the Tiverton Town defence.
The Cobblers had been camped in the visitors half for the opening 10 minutes but when Tiverton did muster their first attempt Jake Suckling did well to tip Sean Szabo's 18-yard strike around the post.
The Cobblers had the lead on 15 minutes, Joe Benjamin rifling the ball home after being played in by Freddie Avill. Just minutes earlier Benjamin had been denied from 8 yards by a great save from Tiverton keeper Danny Lewis.
That lead was nearly doubled on 28 minutes but Greg Taylor's well struck effort from the edge of the area was saved by the finger tips of a fully stretched Lewis.
It was 2-0 three minutes later, Shaun Goodall scoring from the spot after he himself had been brought down in the penalty area by Lewis.
Goodall made it 3-0 from close range on 33 minutes, tapping the ball home from Greg Taylor's neatly delivered cross.
Goodall then completed his hat-trick right on the stroke of half-time with a looping header from 12-yards, his goal owing a lot to Sam Maude's 40-yard cross-field ball.
Tiverton's Alex Faux found himself unmarked at the far post on 49 minutes but his first time effort went high and wide.
Joe Benjamin got his second of the night and the Cobblers fifth on 52 minutes, snaffling home the rebound after Nick Thorogood's initial effort had been blocked.
Greg Taylor made it 6-0 on 57 minutes with a well driven left-footed effort from the edge of the area.
A minute later and Tiverton got on the scoresheet themselves, Alex Faux tapping home from close range.
Tiverton were then awarded a penalty for a Nick Thorogood handball but Jake Suckling went down low to his left to expertly save Steve Goss's spot-kick.
Sean Parrish made a double change on 65 minutes, Ben Judd and Ross Oulton replacing Sam Maude and Jon Marzetti. Parrish then made his third change on 77 minutes, Wes Emery coming on for hat-trick hero Shaun Goodall.
As an aside the two unused substitutes for the Cobblers were Tom Gernon, son of former player Irvin and Paul Walker, who recently played for Wales under 16s in the Victory Shield.
Cameron Nott pulled another goal back for Tiverton on 87 minutes, his powerful near post drive giving Suckling no chance in the Cobblers goal.
There were no further goals however and the Cobblers went onto win the game 6-2. They will now face a home tie against Reading in round 3 on a date yet to be decided.
