NEW TERM WELL UNDERWAY

Posted on: Thu 08 Oct 2009

At the Cobblers Study Centre we are just over half way through the first Playing for Success programme of the academic year. Playing for Success is an out-of-hours learning initiative that uses sport to inspire and motivate local pupils, who may be de-motivated or at risk of under-achieving. Projects focus on increasing pupils' confidence and enjoyment of learning as well as raising literacy, numeracy and ICT skills.

This term we have had some very enthusiastic Playing for Success groups from St. Luke's, Upton Meadows, Chiltern, Lyncrest, Falconers Hill and Danetre School. We have managed to pack lots of exciting educational activities into this term already such as Robolab and Stadium Orienteering. Youngsters in the Study Centre have also been asked to produce comic strips on the computers using photos taken on their stadium tour and set up and manage their own football team in the 'Cobblers Club Challenge'. A highlight of the term so far has been watching the Playing for Success groups investigate the relationship between speed, distance and time by designing parachutes and plasticine models to launch off the top of the North Stand.

Our daytime projects are well underway and this term a group from the Gateway School have started to learn the first steps of sports reporting in our 'Supporter 2 Reporter' project. We are also currently delivering a 'Coaching for Life' project for school leavers funded by Connexions and are looking forward to starting two new Duke of Edinburgh Award groups after the half term.
