CORBY READS WITH 'PLAYING FOR SUCCESS' AND NTFC
A new sports based study support project is being rolled out by Northants Study Centres to Corby schools. Year 5 and year 8 students in the Kingswood Cluster are taking part in 'Corby Reads with Playing for Success' (PfS).
The work of the Cobblers' Study Centre is being taken 'on the road' to help children improve their literacy and reading skills, using sport as the motivation for learning. Currently, Corby schools do not access the PfS programme run by the county's five study support centres and sports clubs due to distance. Anna Letts and colleagues are teaching reading activities such as the NTFC programme trail, football poetry, sport and the 5 senses and 'reading for a purpose' with "Bend it Like Beckham." The pupils also take part in 'brain breaks' and speaking games.
As part of these taster days, a Cobblers in the Community coach visits the school and leads a fun football coaching session. Adrian, Karl and Owen have been impressed with the students' enthusiasm for football and their 'have a go attitude'. The sessions usually involve a warm up, some skills and drills and small sided games. This is usually the highlight of the day and by the time the children return to the classroom they are excited about using sport for their learning and have lots of energy to work hard.
The schools involved are Kingswood Secondary, Kingswood Primary, Hazel Leys primary, Danesholme Junior and Beanfield primary. The project is being backed by the Corby Learning Partnership who run 'Corby Reads' in all of the town's schools.
