NO GOALS FOR RESERVES

Posted on: Wed 25 Feb 2009

The Cobblers reserves were in action on Wednesday afternoon as they took on Wycombe Wanderers at Sixfields in the totesport.com combination.

Liam Dolman, Colin Larkin and Joe Benjamin were all handed a run out for the Cobblers while Wycombe included in their side former Cobblers loanee striker Magno Vieira.

After a quiet opening to the game Will Antwi went close on 16 minutes but his header from the second phase of a Wycombe corner looped over the cross bar. Scott Shulton then made a powerful run for Wycombe on 23 minutes but his near post effort was well saved by the feet of Paul Walker.

The Cobblers were awarded a penalty on 25 minutes following a clumsy challenge on the edge of the area. Colin Larkin stepped up to take the spot-kick and despite sending the goalkeeper the wrong way his well struck effort came back off the inside of the post and into the arms of the fortunate James Reading.

Tom McBride did well to turn his man on 36 minutes but his shot went narrowly over the bar. The deadlock was then very nearly broken on 43 minutes when from a floated Wycombe free-kick, Will Antwi's effort came back off the woodwork before being cleared to safety.

Wycombe made their first change on 53 minutes with Daniel Fitchett coming on to replace the injured Jay Smith. Ian Sampson then made his first change just before the hour mark with Michael Jacobs coming on for Ross Oulton.

With clear-cut chances at a premium a deep cross found Tom McGowan in space on 67 minutes but he couldn't quite direct his far-post header on target. On 69 minutes McBride then drove just over from the edge of the area. Joe Benjamin tried his luck from 25-yards on 73 minutes but his effort flew narrowly over James Reading's cross-bar.

Neither side could conjure up a goal in the remaining minutes and with Welsh under 17 international goalkeeper Paul Walker keeping a clean-sheet on his reserve team debut, the points were shared.
